Bus Éireann has written to Ballybay - Clones MD explaining its position on the age-cap for school bus drivers.
The retirement age for school bus drivers has been set by Bus Éireann at 70 years of age.
The letter explained that the policy is grounded in "the best safety interests" of its customers.
Local councillors have raised issues with the policy. They have outlined that bus driver shortages have a large impact on families throughout the school year.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr. Sinead Flynn highlighted the issue.
She believes that the policy "does not make any sense".
Cllr. Flynn highlighted the impact that driver shortages has.
"Being barred from driving a school bus, simply because they're over 70, despite being fully licensed or medically fit, simply does not make any sense," Cllr. Flynn said.
"Particularly across rural Ireland, we know we're dealing with a serious shortage. Families know this all too well, when schools renew in August, there is sometimes a bit of a lapse. A lot of that is down to the shortage of bus drivers," she added.
