A local councillor has called on the Justice Minister to allocate more Gardai to the county of Cavan.
Cllr. Damien Brady raised the issue at the most recent sitting of Cavan County Council.
He says the Gardai we have in Cavan do great work but they are currently being stretched due to the declining numbers.
He says low numbers of Gardai have a major effect on communities feeling safe and crime prevention.
Cllr .Brady says a number of improvements needs to be made to encourage more Gardai to join the force.
The local councillor who was a firefighter says more Gardai are needed to tackle the drug issue and the likes of a heighted increase in ant-social behaviour.
The Sinn Fein councillor says more Gardai are badly needed and needed now.
He said: "The numbers that I pointed out, the likes of Cavan Town, down from 77 to 62, a huge decrease there.
"Belturbet losing four, Ballyconnell down. Two Gardaí is not even bringing the numbers up to where they are supposed to be, let alone an increase.
"We need to get up to where we are supposed to be, let alone an increase.
"Two Gardai coming into the county is nothing, it's not evening scratching the surface," Cllr. Brady added.
