A Co Monaghan councillor is calling on the government to scrap the planned increase in VAT on electricity and to abandon any further hikes in carbon taxes. The planned increase is to take effect from May 2025. Cllr Sinead Flynn raised the issue at this month's sitting of Monaghan County Council.
A motion will now be sent to the relevant government departments in a bid to force a policy rethink before the increases come into effect. According to Cllr Flynn, at a time when workers and families are facing a cost of living crisis, these planned hikes will "undoubtedly" place further financial strains on households.
