Calls to make public transport free amid fuel crisis

The European Commission is suggesting EU citizens drive and fly less, reduce motorway speeds and work from home if they can.

There are calls to make public transport free amid the fuel crisis.

The European Commission has suggested citizens work from home where they can and drive less.

An emergency meeting of the bloc's energy ministers last night discussed the fallout of high fuel costs and oil shortages caused by the war in Iran.

But Tánaiste Simon Harris insists no work from home mandates will be imposed yet.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach's not ruling out a State of the Nation address as the conflict in Iran continues.

It comes as countries including the UK, US and Australia are broadcasting rare statements from their leaders on the issue.

Micheál Martin previously addressed the nation during the Covid-19 pandemic, with news on developments and restrictions.

He's not ruling out a similar move in the coming days.
