Monaghan County Council received written correspondence today from the Garda Commissioners office authorising the roll out of a new CCTV scheme in Carrickmacross.
Cameras will be installed in 14 locations (17 cameras - 3 locations will have two cameras) around the town and will be located in areas where Gardai believe will be best placed to deal with deterrence, prevention, detection and prosecution of offences.
The next step is for Monaghan County Council to engage a suitably qualified contractor to complete enabling civil and electrical works.
Cllr Colm Carthy welcomed the news.
He told Northern Sound: "After a long campaign to get a public CCTV scheme for the town of Carrickmacross, the Garda Commissioners office authorised the roll out of the scheme. I will try to keep you posted on progress; hopefully installation works will start soon."
