A Carrickmacross councillor has criticised the government's "wait and see approach" when it comes to supporting those struggling with soaring energy costs.
Sinn Féin voted against Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael's support package earlier in the week.
Cllr Colm Carthy believes Government proposals on petrol and diesel didn't go far enough and also abandoned households relying on home heating oil.
Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Cllr Carthy said his party's amendment, which was opposed, would have cut diesel by the maximum and cut petrol by the same amount and would have removed excise entirely from home heating oil.
He said there's been a cost of living crisis in this country for years and the Government had years to put targeted measures in place to support those who needed it most: "We weren’t going to vote in favour of half measures. Supports should of been maximised and our amendment sought to do that. We looked to have the maximum decrease on petrol and diesel, we also sought to reduce the excise on home heating and that wasn’t done by the Government’s motion. We do agree, that we need universal supports for the squeezed middle who are known as the working poor."
