Carthy: Govt undermining Irish neutrality

"We are a neutral state and our role should be seen as significantly different."

A local TD has said that the Michaél Martin has undermined decades of Irish neutrality in recent weeks.

Sinn Féin TD Matt Carthy believes that we have seen "an absolute drag" of any semblance of Irish neutrality.

The TD was speaking regarding Sinn Féin's opposition to against a €90 billion European Parliament loan to Ukraine.

According to Deputy Carthy, that part of the funding will go towards military funding.

He highlighted that the country has accommodated 120,000 Ukrainians, as well as providing humanitarian and practical assistance to Ukraine.

However, Deputy Carthy believes that Ireland as a neutral state shouldn't contribute Irish taxpayers money to fund weaponry for Ukraine.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, he said that Ireland's role should be different to other EU states.

Deputy Carthy said: "We are a neutral state and our role should be seen as significantly different. Even over the last few weeks, we have seen an absolute drag from the government of any semblance of Irish neutrality.

"We've had Michaél Martin this week saying 'that we stand with Ukraine militarily', that is language that has never been used in respect on any conflict. In one sentence, he has undermined decades of a very proud Irish foreign policy that was based on the principle of neutrality.
