A Co Cavan councillor is calling on the Government to allocate 4 billion euro to fund a national scheme providing direct financial support to households for the installation of solar panels and home wind turbines.
Cllr Brendan Fay believes this would enable widespread microgeneration, reducing household carbon footprints, lowering energy costs for homeowners and allowing surplus renewable electricity to be exported back to the national grid.
The local representative fears that under new regulations, Ireland will be fined come 2030 will for not meeting its carbon footprint target.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Fay said it's important to keep money in Ireland for the people rather than wasting it by paying fines to other countries.
He warned that as a country, Ireland is not doing enough.
