Independent councillor Brendan Fay is calling on the Minister for Finance and Tánaiste Simon Harris and the Taoiseach to abolish the Universal Social Charge (USC).
Cllr Fay noted that the USC was brought in at a time of financial crisis and believes it is now time to put money back into the pockets of workers.
Cllr Fay is also calling for the charge to be replaced by a new taxation model that would continue to benefit public services.
The local representative believes that scrapping the USC would offer a financial relief to many and would give a financial boost to those in the squeezed middle who are struggling with the cost of living crisis.
He said Ireland is supposed to be the richest country in the world per capita but people are still struggling.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Fay said ordinary workers need an urgent relief.
