Members of Cavan County Council were educated on the importance of recognising symptoms of sepsis in yesterday's full council meeting.
North East Sepsis Awareness group addressed the local authority as it sought support in seeking a public awareness campaign on sepsis.
Cathriona Flanagan and Hannah Tormey presented the information and emphasised that sepsis does not discriminate and can affect anyone of any age.
They encouraged people to know the symptoms; Slurred speech, new confusion drowsiness, extreme shivering, muscle aches, fever, not passing urine in 12 hours, shortness of breath, blue lips, heart racing, dizziness, feeling like you're going to die and skin mottled/ discoloured and a rash not blanching.
NESA also outlined that support is desperately needed in terms of post sepsis care.
The group is meeting with the Department of Health next week in an effort to get a much needed public health campaign on sepsis.
The council were supportive of the presentation and message and agreed to write to the Minister of Health backing NESA's call for a public health campaign to further the awareness and education of the illness.
