A Cavan-Monaghan TD has highlighted that Ireland needs to diversify it's trading relations with countries around the world.
Sinn Féin TD, Matt Carthy said that Ireland seen what happened when trade was concentrated too greatly on one area in Brexit.
He also highlighted that the imposition of tariffs from the United States is causing great difficulty.
However, speaking in relation to the Mercosur agreement, Deputy Carthy highlighted that international trade must be "sustainable."
He highlighted that free trade is a good thing, but not at any cost.
The TD said that successive Irish governments have not recognised that nuanced positions are needed relating to free trade.
