A poultry farmer in Co. Cavan has said that bird flu is putting a lot of pressure on farmers on the build up to Christmas.
Brendan Soden is the IFA’s Poultry vice-chairperson.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Mr. Soden he said that he thinks 6,000 birds have been impacted by the latest case of bird flu.
He believes that this case effected younger turkeys, who weren’t going to be used in the Christmas market.
Restriction and surveillance zones are in place around the site in Co. Cavan.
It’s the fifth outbreak of the disease in less than a month on a commercial poultry farm in the Republic of Ireland, while there have also been multiple cases confirmed in Northern Ireland.
He said the disease is spreading widely through wildlife.
Mr. Soden said: "The main thing is here, as a producer myself, we don't want this coming into our site.
"It seems to be widely going around in wildlife at the minute, we are trying to protect it as best we can.
"Yesterday I had phone calls with farmers in the surveillance zone, and they are very worried about it.
"You don't know where it is. You can try your best, biosecurity, keep everything else, but it may be bad look that you get it," Mr. Soden added.
