A local Senator raised the issue of homelessness in the Seanad last week.
Pauline Tully highlighted the current figures and the vulnerable groups that are affected.
As it stands there are over 17,000 at this stage including nearly 5,500 children.
She noted that worryingly more and more people over the age of 65 are facing homelessness, which she described as a terrible indictment of the State
Senator Tully commended Cavan County Council which does huge work, but noted that it unfortunately cannot accommodate everybody and some people have to be put into emergency accommodation.
Speaking in the Seanad she outlined that Cavan does not have any hostel, it has two bed and breakfasts that are used as emergency accommodation but beyond that people have to be sent to a hostel in Dundalk.
Senator Tully outlined the hidden homeless issue.
