Cavan volunteers celebrate 75 years of Civil Defence

Over 350 Volunteers received a Commemorative Medal to mark the occasion.

49 volunteers from Cavan County Civil Defence recently attended a function celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Civil Defence in Ireland.

The event was organised by the Civil Defence Branch at the Department of Defence, and the Cavan volunteers were joined by Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr John Paul Feeley and Director of Service Ms. Margaret McNally, in addition to volunteers from Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Monaghan, Mayo Roscommon, Louth, Longford, Galway, and Westmeath.

The gathering was addressed by Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence at the Office of the Taoiseach, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Defence, Mr Thomas Byrne TD, along with Ms. Jacqui McCrum, Secretary General Department of Defence and Ms. Cep Carty, Principal Officer Civil Defence Branch, Department of Defence.

Addressing the gathering Minister Byrne said: "I am honoured to commemorate 75 years of Civil Defence in Ireland, a proud tradition of service, resilience, and community spirit. From its foundation in 1950 to its vital role today Civil Defence has consistently adapted to meet the needs of Irish People."
