Cllr Pauric Clerkin has warmly welcomed the completion of significant resurfacing works on the Bog Road in Scotstown.
The works were completed following a long-standing campaign to improve road safety and driving conditions on the route.
This particular piece of road infrastructure received approximately €300,000 in targeted funding and covered a 1,100-metre stretch of the road from Scotstown Village to McQuaid's.
According to Cllr Clerkin, this key section had become a "major concern" for local residents and motorists due to its "deteriorating condition, uneven surface, and overall safety hazards."
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Clerkin says this upgrade represents a much-needed improvement to what had become a dangerous stretch of road for local motorists.
He said the campaign to improve the Bog Road was driven by a strong community effort.
Cllr Clerkin told Northern Sound: "The road is now excellent, and I want to thank the councillors and engineers for their hard work. However, concerns remain regarding the safety of the road verges, which have been raised significantly during resurfacing. While stone has been laid to stabilise the edges, there is currently no structure in place to secure it, raising the risk of vehicles slipping into adjacent drains.
"An incident has already occurred where a vehicle pulling in to let another pass ended up in the drain. The verges pose a serious health and safety issue, and I would ask that engineers take a closer look at this."
Cllr Clerkin has committed to raising this matter with the engineering team in Monaghan Municipal District and will advocate for any additional measures required to ensure the safety of all road users along the newly resurfaced stretch.
"While the resurfacing is a very welcome development, we must ensure that all aspects of road safety are addressed, including the verges. I’ll continue to work with residents and the Roads Section to ensure their concerns are heard and acted upon."
