A Monaghan Senator is calling for further funding to be allocated for upgrade works on the N53.
Senator Gallagher recently raised the issue of the N3 which is the national road that leads from Castleblayney to Dundalk.
Senator Gallagher highlighted that DkIT has approximately 5,000 students, this includes many students from Cavan, Monaghan, Meath and Louth who travel on the N53 road to get to DkIT.
Despite this, Senator Gallagher says the road is in "very poor condition" and is "not suitable for the volume of traffic on it."
It was confirmed recently that DkIT will form a partnership with Queen's University Belfast from next September .
As a result of this significant development which will increase numbers, Senator Gallagher says there is a stronger arguement now more than ever before for increased funding to upgrade the road.
Senator Gallagher told Northern Sound: "Part of this road is based in Northern Ireland, therefore will take a dual approach to provide funding on both sides of the border. The funding for the university status and partnership was under the shared island initiative and I feel funding for this road initiative could also be under the shared island initiative. Therefore I have asked the Minister to come into the chambers so we can debate and discuss this further."
