A local community has expressed their concerns regarding Monaghan County Council's proposal to close a local route.
It's part of the planned dual carriageway from Clontibret to the border at Aughnacloy. Residents and farmers in the area have expressed their concerns regarding the plans surrounding the Island Road closure.
While they have highlighted their concerns, locals have emphasised that they have no objection to the construction of the new road itself, but they are deeply troubled by the design team's proposal to close the Island Road. They say this would ultimately divide the parish of Truagh, disrupting long-standing community connections and daily travel for residents and farmers.
According to Mikey McGeough, who is a local resident the design team's proposed plans will put extra kilometres on travellers that use the existing route. He said that the proposed alternative route is simply not feasible as it is not fit for purpose.
Mikey believes the road designers are not seeing the bigger picture and that the Bog road which is the road that they would have to use isn't suitable.
He believes himself and others in the area aren't being listened to and this needs to change.
