There's been another funding announcement for the Northern Sound region today. This time, central government has allocated over €1.5 million euro for Greenways and €810,000 for the development of Active Travel projects in Cavan and Monaghan.
The figures broken down sees the greenway from Belturbet to Ballyconnell receive €120,000 and the Ulster Canal Smithboro Clones and Smithboro to Monaghan allocated €75,000 each.
The most significant allocation of €1 million euro has been awarded to the Ulster Canal Greenway running to the border with Fermanagh. €60,000 of funding allocated under the Active Travel Programme will go to Bawnboy, Co. Cavan.
While in County Monaghan, the N2 cyclepath at Emyvale Village and Corlat to the Collegiate College will each receive 300 thousand euro for development works while the Corlat to Coolshannagh stretch has been earmarked for €50,000.
Welcoming the money into the region, Cavan-Monaghan TD Brendan Smith said greenways and cycle paths are an "important part of our recreational and social infrastructure" (listen below):
