Over €5 million has been announced to improve homes for older and disabled people across the Northern Sound region.
The funding was announced for Cavan and Monaghan under the Housing Adaptation Grant, and forms part of a wider national package which will see total projected funding of over €152 million allocated nationwide.
Grants are available to assist disabled people in carrying out the necessary work to make a home more suitable for their needs.
Grants are also available to assist older people to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out on their homes.
€2.41 million has been allocated to Cavan County Council and the local authority will make a contribution of €426,554 bringing the total available in grant aid this year to €2,843,696.
In Monaghan €2.115 million is being made available by the Minister and the Council will contribute €373,322 bringing the total to €2,488,816.
Local TD, Brendan Smith welcomed the news.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he said that the scheme is an important scheme for elderly people.
Deputy Smith said: "Often there are delays in people getting approved to do work. A year ago, the grant aid levels were increased, which was necessary. There is always a huge demand on this particular scheme.
"At any given time, we would have a number of applications we would be supporting. Again, I emphasise, it can be particularly important in ensuring that an elderly person that may be in declining health, that they can remain as long as possible in their own home with good quality accommodation," Deputy Smith added.
