Secondary school children in East Cavan have been left without a bus service from Shercock to Bailieboro for the last three weeks.
Tommy Culleton told today's Joe Finnegan Show that parents like himself are "concerned" with state exams starting on the 4th of June.
With exams "just around the corner" Tommy says parent are "frustrated" over the lack of progress made.
The local father believes school bus services should be a "priority" and called out the lack of contingency planning by Bus Éireann.
With approximately 40-50 children currently left in limbo, Tommy says parents have to organise transport amongst themselves which only adds to the frustration. Tommy noted that this isn't the first time this has happened, with the same situation occurring back in 2023 lasting five weeks:
In response to concerned parents, Bus Eireann issued a statement saying: In the current school year, over 172,500 children are transported to and from school each day under the School Transport Scheme.
However, from time to time, difficulties can arise with a small number of services in certain locations. This is due to operational challenges and market shortages in the bus/driver industry in the Cavan area.
Bus Éireann is actively and continuously working to identify additional vehicles and drivers who can join its panel to provide school transport services. The Bus Éireann School Transport team is making every effort to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. They are engaging directly with affected families and will continue to provide updates as soon as a transport solution is secured. Bus Éireann sincerely apologise to the families affected for the inconvenience caused by the delay in resuming this service and appreciate their patience and understanding.
