An electric scooter was seized by Gardai in Monaghan Town over the weekend.
According to Gardai, the driver had no helmet, no licence or insurance and didn't believe that it was necessary to have such things as the scooter is electric.
As a result, Gardai in Monaghan Town are reminding people that whether a vehicle is electric, petrol or diesel, if it is mechanically propelled then it requires insurance.
This latest seizure follows concerns raised by Monaghan Senator Robbie Gallagher when it comes to the number of detections made by Gardaí towards those illegally driving an e-scooter on footpaths.
Since May 2024, there's only been eight detections made in Co Cavan and six across both Co Monaghan and Co Louth.
As a result, Senator Gallagher is calling for more of Garda presence in our towns and villages in order to pick up detections.
He also wrote to Gardaí asking for a greater awareness campaign for those illegally using footpaths when on an e-scooters.
