Today marks the end of an era as the Sisters of St Louis are closing their motherhouse convent in Monaghan town after 166 years.
The sisters arrived to Monaghan in 1859 under the invite of the then Bishop of Clogher, Bishop McNally.
As the Motherhouse closes today, six sisters remain in the town - two in a nursing home, and four others who live and work in the locality.
For more than 166 years the St Louis sisters have contributed greatly to the provision of education and the community life in Monaghan.
To mark the convent's closure, several events are taking place today in Monaghan.
The St Louis convent lands and buildings were recently acquired by Monaghan County Council.
Sister Ann Matthews says the people of Monaghan have played a pivotal role since the nuns' arrival in the town back in 1859,
