A motion was raised at the most recent of Monaghan County Council in relation to energy prices.
Cllr Alan Johnston asked that Monaghan County Council write to the Minister for Finance Simon Harris TD requesting that the Government introduce cost of living and cost of business supports.
This is due to the impact of the Iran war on energy prices.
He asked that such supports should be targeted at those individuals and business/community/sports entities and sectors that are most affected and should be introduced in advance of the budget'.
Cllr Johnston also asked that That Monaghan County Council write to the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien TD requesting that the Government review the current electricity pricing structure.
This would be to eliminate the market clearing price so that cheaper energy producers can pass on cheaper prices to their customers.
He noted that currently energy prices in Ireland are based on the most expensive source required to meet demand.
Cllr Johnston also noted that Ireland's heavy reliance on natural gas causes electricity prices to closely follow volatile global gas markets, despite cheaper renewable production.
He also highlighted that with gas making up 40% of energy production, consumers face distorted prices driven by geopolitical factors.
