The Environmental Protection Agency says action is needed to improve water quality in rivers and lakes across the country, including the Northern Sound region.
A new report indicates that wastewater that doesn't meet pollution standards is still being released in various towns and village across the country.
Inspector in the wastewater enforcement team with the Environmental Protection Agency, David Shannon explained that when wastewater isn't treated properly it's the environment that pays the price.
While progress has been made, he is warning that some areas, such as Castleblayney, are not being managed to the standard they should be.
Mr. Shannon explained that, work is ongoing in Carrickmacross, due to be completed next year and in Bailieboro work is due to start shortly and run until 2027.
