More than 15 years after the financial crash, a deeply personal and largely hidden crisis continues to unfold across Monaghan, with those in or approaching retirement hardest hit.
That's according to figures released by IrishHomes.ie this week, who released its latest figures this week.
An estimated 210 households in Co. Monaghan remain in mortgage arrears of over 12 months, many dating back to the period between 2008 and 2010.
It revealed that a growing number of those affected are aged between 60 and 75 are living with the fear of losing their homes.
In many cases, these arrears have persisted for well over a decade, sometimes for as long as 20 years.
In Monaghan, almost 130 mortgage accounts, the majority of them family homes, are either already in the legal process or at risk of entering it.
