All three outbreaks in cattle in Slovakia are within 20 kilometres of the recent detection in Hungary on the 6th of March.

Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon says his Department is taking action to protect Irish livestock.

It followed the initial confirmation by Germany on the 10th of January it had its first case of the disease since 1988.

No animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease have been imported into Ireland from Slovakia, Hungary or Germany since January 1st.

Minister Heydon says those travelling to Ireland from affected countries should take every precaution not to bring the disease with them through contaminated meat, dairy and clothes, shoes and equipment.
