Monaghan Fianna Fáil Senator Robbie Gallagher has hailed newly released crime statistics as evidence that Ireland is becoming a safer place, pointing to significant year on year reductions in burglary and robbery across the country.
According to the latest data, burglary and related offences fell by 13% in 2025 compared with the previous year. Robbery, extortion, and hijacking offences also declined, dropping by 11%.
The figures continue a multi year downward trend, burglary incidents are now 10% lower than in 2022, with 8,469 cases recorded last year.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher said: "High visibility policing, Garda patrols, and targeted crime prevention initiatives are making a tangible difference. People can go about their day with greater confidence knowing Gardaí are active and engaged in their communities."
While welcoming the progress, Gallagher cautioned that their work is far from finished: "While these reductions are very welcome, there is still more work to do, continued support for An Garda Síochána is essential to ensure these improvements are maintained and that every community can feel secure."
He also emphasised the role of local involvement in sustaining the trend: "Safer streets are not just about policing. Prevention, community involvement, and local initiatives all make a difference. Together, we can keep Ireland a safer place for families, businesses, and neighbours alike."
