A driver in Co. Cavan has been detected travelling at 173km/h in a 100km/h zone.
A Garda Roads Policing Operation is taking place throughout the May Bank Holiday Weekend.
The driver was detected on the N87 in Belturbet on Thursday.
Separately in Co. Monaghan, a driver was caught travelling at 80km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R188 in Drumbear.
During the first day of the operation between 7:00am on Thursday until 7:00am today, there were no fatalities as a result of traffic collisions on our roads.
The total number of fatalities on Irish roads this year is 55.
Throughout this weekend's Roads Policing Operation, Gardaí are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.
To date, a total of 15 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
In excess of 580 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the first 24 hours of the operation.
During this period, nearly 50 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging all road users to support their efforts to keep them and all others on the roads safe this May bank holiday weekend.
Every member of An Garda Síochána on-duty this long weekend will be out conducting road traffic enforcement activity.
Gardaí will be placing a particular emphasis on detecting those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs this weekend.
An Garda Síochána is urging road users to take extra caution around vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists.
