Cavan Gardai have issued a statement in relation to false claims online that has been widely circulated in relation to incidents in Co. Cavan.
They say these matters have been fully investigated by Gardai in Cavan and there no criminal offence took place.
The statement went on to say that An Garda Siochána have regularly highlighted the rise in the level of disinformation, misinformation and fake news.
Misinformation, disinformation and fake news are typically amplified by online accounts in order to spread fear and concern amongst our communities.
Gardai are appealing to all members of the public to independently verify any information that you are reading on social media and/or messaging apps.
The statement issued concluded by saying that it is not just the responsibility of An Garda Sochána to challenge this disinformation, misinformation and fake news circulating in society but also the responsibility of mainstream civic society and media.
