The Government has accepted a recommendation to establish a statutory commission of investigation into convicted sex offender Michael Shine.
Shine was a surgeon at Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, the catchment area for which includes Cavan and Monaghan, from 1964 to 1995.
He was convicted in 2017 and 2019 of abuse of a number of boys, the Health Minster has commended the bravery of 75 victims who came forward to share their lived experiences.
A report for the Department of Health says the investigation should be a six-phase process and should run concurrently and begin immediately.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Solicitor Lorcan Staines says that it's really encouraging that the Government is looking at an investigation.
He hopes that this will give victims allow victims to achieve a little bit of closure and give a scenario for people a chance to come forward in comfortable circumstances.
