Kilnaleck man Nathan Galligan says housing is causing major concern amongst younger people in Ireland.
The Fianna Fail representative was responding to figures published by the National Youth Council of Ireland this week.
The figures stated that three-in-five under-25s are considering emigration, with almost one-in-three strongly considering leaving Ireland to seek a better quality of life.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Nathan believes an emergency strategy is "needed" for housing, particularly when it comes to people in their mid-20s and upwards.
He also believes planning regulations need to be looked at as there is a lot of "bureaucracy" when it comes to planning permission and trying to access developers.
He told Northern Sound: "Some don’t realise this but not that many developers in the construction industry are building houses as it isn’t as profitable at the moment and they feel other initiatives will make money more money so I think more incentives are needed also to change that."
