Councillor Sinead Flynn is calling for the Government to consider all income thresholds and to consider the squeezed middle.
It was confirmed at this week's sitting of Monaghan County Council by Housing Minister James Browne that a review of income thresholds is underway for social housing.
Cllr Sinead Flynn described the development as "long overdue."
According to Cllr Flynn, the last review took place in 2023 and since then we've seen a number of increases in the minimum wage and the income thresholds have not increased in line with those changes.
The Sinn Fein representative warned that the "cost of living crisis is getting worse and people are being squeezed in every direction."
Cllr Flynn is calling for Government to consider those individuals who are perceived as the middle income earners.
With sky high rents, grocery and fuel costs increasing, Cllr Flynn says the reality is that individuals will struggle to get a mortgage or come up with a 20% deposit.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn is calling for the Government to consider all income thresholds and to consider the squeezed middle when they are doing their reviews.
She told Northern Sound: "A couple earning €85,000 will struggle to get a mortgage and if they do so they will be buying a modest home and even at that it’s not guarantied because supply is so limited. We need to increaseto increase the incomethresold for social housing applicants and to push out more affordable home schemes."
