Local councillor Stiofán Conaty has welcomed the development by Conradh na Gaeilge which have voted to amend its constitution to work towards Irish Unity.
He described it as "hugely significant and a historic development".
Cllr Conaty said he was proud to attend Ard-Fheis Chonradh na Gaeilge in Belfast, where delegates from across the island voted overwhelmingly in favour of the amendment.
He said Conradh na Gaeilge has now set out as a working objective to actively pursue Irish Unity for the benefit of the Irish language and the Gaeltacht regions.
Cllr Conaty said that the Irish language must be front and centre in conversations about the reunification of Ireland.
Cllr Conaty further encouraged other organisations, north and south, to follow the example set by Conradh na Gaeilge and called on political parties in the 26 counties to step up their efforts in bringing about a referendum.
The Cavan County Councillor said the time to have the conversation is now. "Conradh na Gaeilge, known in the history books as The Gaelic League, has a storied past and has played an important role in matters of national significance since its founding, including the Gaelic revival movement and the struggle for independence.
"As momentum grows for the calling of a referendum on Irish Unity, the Irish language revival continues to gather pace alongside it. Tá siad fite fuaite. "We must make sure that when we do achieve Irish Unity, the language is protected, promoted and put front and centre"
"Tá an cheist mhór ag teacht", he said. "We all have a responsibility to plan and prepare, to make sure that people know exactly what they are voting for when the referendum does take place".
