Justice Minister to deliver public apology to family of Monaghan hit-and-run victim

The O'Farrell family has been campaigning ever since for a public inquiry into his death, and have expressed their disillusionment with the courts system.

The Justice Minister, Jim O'Callaghan, will be delivering a public apology on Tuesday to Monaghan hit-and-run victim Shane O'Farrell.
The 23-year-old was killed while out cycling near his home in Carrickmacross in 2011.
Driver Zigimantas Gridziuska was a repeating offender and should have been in custody at the time.
He regularly appeared before the District and Circuit Criminal courts in Cavan, Monaghan, and Louth but never served a custodial sentence.

The O'Farrell family has been campaigning ever since for a public inquiry into his death, and have expressed their disillusionment with the courts system.
Deputy Matt Carthy has been welcoming the news, saying the apology is long-overdue:
