'Laws will be changed to reflect the memory of Shane O'Farrell'

Minister Jim O'Callaghan told the Dail today that the criminal justice system did not protect Shane O'Farrell in the way that it should have.

The Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan has delivered a public apology to the family of hit-and-run victim Shane O’Farrell in the Dáil.

The apology follows almost 14 years of campaigning by the local family.

Mr O'Farrell was killed in a hit an run incident while he was cycling near his home in Carrickmacross in 2011, at the age of 23.

The man who drove the car - Zigimantas Gridziuska - was a repeat offender on bail, and should have been in prison at the time of Shane's death.

Shane O'Farrell's family have called for a public inquiry into the incident, however Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan believes the facts have been well established.

Minister O'Callaghan also confirmed today that a Senior Counsel will be appointed to examine bail laws in Ireland before reporting back with proposed changes.

The Government will also set up a new bursary in the School of Law in UCD, in memory of Shane O’Farrell.
