A Monaghan councillor is calling for "all eligible students" to be afforded school transport for the academic school year commencing September 2025 and to discuss those outstanding school transport issues which have been unresolved to date. Cllr Sinead Flynn raised her concerns at this month's sitting of Monaghan County Council. Monaghan County Council will now write again to the Minister for Education, Helen McEntee and to Siobhan Griffin Regional School Transport Manager for Bus Eireann, to request a meeting as soon as possible in relation to this issue.
According to Cllr Flynn, each year, families across the county experience significant uncertainty and distress due to inadequate transport provisions, with many eligible students facing delays or outright exclusion from the service. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said; "This meeting must focus on ensuring that all eligible students are guaranteed school transport for the 2025 school year. Additionally, we must address the outstanding transport issues that remain unresolved, causing ongoing stress for families across our county.
"Each year, families across our county experience significant uncertainty and distress due to inadequate transport provisions, with many eligible students facing delays or outright exclusion from the service. This situation is not just unacceptable but is a failure to meet the needs of our young people and their right to accessible education. With the academic year fast approaching, it is crucial that we take proactive steps to ensure that all eligible students receive the transport services they are entitled to. We cannot allow another year of frustration for parents, students, and schools due to logistical failures that should have been addressed long ago."
