A local councillor has called on the Minister for Agriculture to introduce a new compensation scheme to cover poultry farmers directly and indirectly impacted by bird flu.
The motion which was brought forward by Cllr Raymond Aughey at this week’s sitting of Monaghan County Council was passed unanimously.
France recently announced that it will provide economic aid through a compensation scheme for poultry farmers impacted by restrictions related to avian influenza.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Aughey said this shows that there is “another way forward” to protect our farmers.
While Co Monaghan is the largest poultry producer In Ireland, Cllr Aughey claims farms sizes are some of the smallest in the country.
He has called on the Minister to look at the French economic aid package for farmers and to use it as a template to protect and financially compensate our own farmers here in Co Monaghan.
