A local councillor has raised a safety issue of a busy footpath in Co Cavan.

Carmel Brady has described the footpath walking from Old Bridge Road junction/ Holy Family School in Cootehill towards Halton's Forrest.

She emphasised that the route is often used by people pushing babies in prams or with small children.

Other regular users of the footpath include students of the Holy Family School and users of Drumlin House services.

The footpath was described as being too narrow and close to the busy route.

Speaking to Northern Sound Cllr Carmel Brady explained the danger on the road.

"It's the same level as the roadway, which leaves the vacuum and the shaking of the lorries. It's creating terrible danger. Also, you have mothers going out with buggies, children on bicycles and people with dogs.

It's very, very dangerous. The speed is supposed to be in your 50 mile zone limit, but as we know, it's not a hair too there. We also have a housing estate, which has a huge amount of children coming out there, going to both the national school and the secondary school.

So we have a good wide road, but we have to look at getting funding to either widen the footpath that we have there or realigning the road."
