Last week, for the first time in the history of the state, the Irish language community were forced to go on strike.
They were opposing the latest round of cuts announced by Foras na Gaeilge, amounting to €820,000.
Cllr Stiofan Conaty says these cuts are disastrous and will affect groups who are already under severe funding pressure. He said the unprecedented strike is a testament to the frustration and anger they are feeling.
Cllr Conaty raised a motion in Cavan County Council this week over the issue. The Sinn Fein Councillor says it's simply not good enough how the government have been treating our native language.
Cllr Conaty. "Locally, funding and structural support for local Irish language initiatives needs to be improved. I wish to take this opportunity to commend and to thank the council staff and in particular, the library service who put together a jam-packed and enjoyable programme of events for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025 in Cavan. Much credit and congratulations must also go to the community groups Gaeilge an Chabháin and Gaeil Mhuinchille in Cootehill for their voluntary efforts over Seachtain na Gaeilge, organising events and allowing Irish speakers to the language socialably, providing learners with an outlet to practice, and normalising the presenceand use of our language in our county."
