Local disability advocate warns most vulnerable are 'living in poverty'

The Ballyjamesduff advocate warned that people need support now to cover essential expenses.

David Cahill, a disability advocate based in Ballyjamesduff has urged people with disabilities who are struggling with rising electricity and home heating costs to apply for the Department of Social Protection's Additional Needs Payment.

David says the ongoing campaign by the Disability Federation of Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association and Access for All Ireland for an urgent cost of disability payment of €400 is only the next step in a wider set of reforms that are urgently needed.

Last Tuesday the Social Democrats hosted a meeting in Leinster House where people with disabilities told harrowing stories of their lived experiences over the past few months and the hardships they are facing choosing between putting food on the table or turning the heating on.

The Ballyjamesduff advocate warned that people need support now to cover essential expenses while the Department works with stakeholders on a permanent lasting solution.

Mr Cahill told Northern Sound: "I encourage people with disabilities to apply for the Additional Needs Payment to cover any additional costs that can’t reasonably be covered by your income and the additional supports already offered by the Department such as the contribution on Electricity bills through the Household Benefits Package Fuel Allowance.

"If you need further information on the Additional Needs Payment please contact the office of your local TD, your local Councillor or the Citizens Information service who will be happy to provide assistance with a paper application.  Information is also available on MyWelfare where you can make an online application for those who wish to do so.

"While Government are refusing at the moment to make an across the board payment to people with disabilities and those who are vulnerable in our society, supports are available to assist in times of hardship.  Budget 2027 is a lifetime away for those who are at increased risk of serious illness brought on by insufficient heating and those who are forced to cut down on essential medical treatments due to costs.  People need support now to cover these essential expenses while the Department works with stakeholders on a permanent lasting solution.

"I wish to thank the Disability Federation of Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Access For All Ireland, the Social Democrats and all who participated in last weeks meeting in Leinster House and all who have supported the campaign to date."
