Local farmer says 'lessons must be learned' following storm

The Ballyconnell man says farmers must be supported in maintaining trees near power lines.

A Ballyconnell farmer says we need "alternatives" in order to prevent people living in the cold and darkness the next time a storm hits the region. Hugh Farrell is the General Secretary of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association (ICSA). While the local farmer paid tribute to the "trojan work" carried out by his local community of Ballyconnell, he believes more urgent support such as emergency accommodation for those impacted should have been made available.

He also noted that while farmers have "resilience" and are always the first on the ground when it comes to dealing with any crisis, additional support for farmers dealing with adverse weather conditions is also needed. Speaking to Northern Sound, Mr Farrell outlined what improvements he thinks should be made following Storm Eowyn;
