Local councillor Sinead Flynn is calling on hospitality venues across Co Monaghan to enforce the 'Ask for Angela' initiative.
The safety initiative ‘Ask for Angela’ was rolled out to bars, clubs and other licensed businesses back in 2016.
People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for ‘Angela’.
This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them.
Cllr Flynn's calls are part of joint action between Monaghan County Council and the Monaghan Women's Assembly to highlight 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
This annual campaign runs from November 25th until December 10th.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn said "we're taking a small but important step to ensure that everyone in the county feels safe when they go out and about."
