A local councillor is calling for a commitment to be made to underground power lines along the North-South Interconnector.
Sinead Flynn stressed how modern infrastructure is "essential" for rural communities, however she stands with local anti-pylon campaigners who want pylons placed underground.
Cllr Flynn says "we all understand the importance of resilient infrastructure, and every independent report and study confirms that undergrounding power lines is the way forward."
As a result, she is calling on the Government to listen to rural communities and to act in line with best international practice.
She believes that the "evidence is clear" when it comes to the possibility of undergrounding power lines along the North-South Interconnector: "Investment must never come at the expense of our health, heritage, or landscape. We all understand the importance of resilient infrastructure, and every independent report and study confirms that undergrounding power lines is the way forward. I therefore urge the Government to listen to our rural communities and act on the clear evidence in this matter and underground the power lines along the North-South Interconnector."
At the most recent sitting of the Ballybay-Clones Municipal District, Cllr Flynn proposed for the MD to write to Cathal Marley, Chief Executive of EirGrid; the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin TD; the Tánaiste, Simon Harris TD; and the Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation, Jack Chambers TD, as well as their respective offices, "demanding that they listen to local communities throughout our Municipal District and commit to undergrounding the power lines along the North–South Interconnector, in line with best international practice."
