Local motorists are being urged to take care over the bank holiday weekend as roads remain wet following recent weather conditions.
Flooding remains widespread across the region and more rain is expected in the coming days.
Gardai across Cavan and Monaghan will be carrying out an enhanced Road Safety and Traffic Enforcement campaign across the St Brigid's bank holiday weekend with dedicated checkpoints in place.
The campaign began yesterday and will run until 7am on 3 February.
Eight people have died on Irish roads in January 2026.
Adrian O'Sullivan is the Road Safety Officer with Monaghan County Council.
Speaking to Northern Sound, he outlined the importance of motorists staying safe this weekend: "The Gardai have their campaign up and running as normal. Particularly this weekend road conditions are worst than normal due rainfall, particularly on roads in South Monaghan. If you come across a road that is flooded, don't drive through it and get stranded as that could be the end of you car if water gets in your engine. "
