A Kingscourt resident who is a double lung transplant recipient and who also underwent a further operation for a new kidney last year, says the new opt-out law for organ donation will give hope to so many currently on waiting lists.
David Crosby says while its been a long time coming, this week is a milestone in organ donation.
David says the new law will reduce waiting times, reduce waiting lists and will allow more people to live on through the gift of life.
The local man has lost two brothers and one sister to breathing problems and he's is urging everyone to have that conversation with loved ones surrounding organ donation. From Tuesday, it's assumed that a person wants to donate their organs when they die unless they have objected to the process while they were still alive.
It is believed the new system will increase the donor pool of organs for over 600 people currently on the donor list.
David said he knows first hand the importance of being an organ donor. He says when you are told you don't have long to live unless you get a transplant and when you do it is certainly the greatest gift of all time. The Kingscourt man has been pushing this new law for many years, the advocate for the new opt-out law says it's about moving the dial forward when it comes to organ donation.
