Road Safety Officer for Monaghan County Council Adrian O'Sullivan is advising parents not to purchase an e-scooter a child under the age of 16.
Under new legislation e-scooters are illegal for under 16s on public roads.
Mr O'Sullivan pointed to a recent report which was published by the Royal College of Physicians highlighting the massive increase in the number of children being admitted to Temple Street and emergency units throughout the country with head injuries due to e-scooters.
Two adults have been killed already on roads this year due to e-scooters.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Mr O'Sullivan said that parents need to think long and hard about buying a device that can potentially go up to 80 kilometres per hour.
He added that the dangers around e-scooters are very serious:
