A local Senator is highlighting the need for CPR and first aid training to be included in the driver theory test.
Robbie Gallagher recently raised the issue, after he was approached by the Irish Heart Foundation.
The proposal would ensure learner drivers have knowledge of CPR, defibrillator use and emergency response at road traffic accidents.
It comes as similar measures are due to be introduced in the UK in early 2026, with an EU directive expected to be transposed into Irish law within two years.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher said that the changes have the potential to save lives.
