A local senator has highlighted the issues of continued delays in dealing with appeals by An Bord Pleanála.
Senator Pauline Tully highlighted the disparity between the strict timelines imposed on local authorities and applicants for planning decisions, and the lack of such timelines for An Bord Pleanála, which can result in prolonged processes.
Senator Tully shared the experience of a Cavan Constituent who received planning permission in March of 2024. A third-party appeal was lodged with An Bord Pleanála shortly thereafter, but despite a year having passed, the appeal remains unresolved.
The board had notified the applicant that an inspector would conduct an inspection in August, but no one arrived. Another notification promised an inspection before Christmas, yet again, no inspector arrived. The local senator said the applicant continues to await a decision, facing significant uncertainty and frustration. Senator Tully called on the Seanad leader to address this issue with the Minister to ensure timely resolutions of appeals.
