A number of students from Coláiste Dún an Rí in Kingscourt featured on RTE's Upfront with Katie Hannon last night. Accompanied by school principal, Mr Fergal Boyle, students Cadence Mooney, Aoife Kennedy, Emily Ward, Amy Monaghan, Danielle Rooney, Darragh Byrne, Daniel Whelan, Liam Raymond, Aaron Smith and Mairead McCaul took part in an open discussion about the hit Netflix show 'Adolescence'.
The show centres on a 13-year-old schoolboy named Jamie Miller who is arrested for the murder of a female classmate. The show has also sparked a national conversation about the impact of social media and "manosphere" influencers. Speaking to Northern Sound, Principal of Coláiste Dún an Rí, Mr Fergal Boyle said he was "proud" of his students for taking part in such an important conversation. He said while it is impossible for parents to police everything that their child is watching or reading online, he believes it is important for parents to communicate with their children: "Here in the school from its establishment we've had a ban on mobile phones in the school. For us as parents we cannot know or police everything that our children are watching or observing on social media or the internet. It's very important for parents to have communication with their children and that sort of communication and relationship doesn't start at teenage years, it starts during the primary schools years and before that. That open communication and connection is so important."
