Local TD Matt Carthy has been appointed as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration.
The Sinn Fein TD said he is eager to ensure the speedy establishment of the committee and to get to work to make sure that the government is held to account and that there is better delivery of justice.
He says he is honoured to have been appointed as the Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, adding that this committee has a lot of urgent and important work to do. Deputy Carthy said while the committee will have a lot of legislative work to conduct, it also has an important role to play in holding the government and the Minister for Justice to account.
He said as Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Home Affairs and Migration I look forward to working with all those involved in our justice and migration systems, including with the Garda Siochána representative associations and the new policing oversight structures. Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Carthy said as committee chair there are a number of policies that he wants to see on the agenda very quickly.
"These include an examination of the new garda divisional model of which there is increasing criticism, the recruitment and retention crisis in An Garda Siochána the profiteering in the granting of IPAS contracts and the wider dysfunctions within the migration system."
“I feel strongly that a strong and active committee will be able to contribute significantly to finding solutions that work for our communities, the Gardaí and all affected stakeholders. I hope government will allow for the speedy establishment of the committees so that we can begin this important work.”
